Matisse “Wild Beast” Collages

What started out as way to review color theory and mixing, turned into a Matisse-inspired collage ensemble. We worked on creating a background of unusual and intense color (tempera cakes and liquid florescent tempera), created a drawing of a "wild beast" to play homage to Matisse's nickname and finished with some stenciled and cut paper shapes.  Varnish was also added to the beast to create some contrast with sheen. 

Tin Foil Line Relief

7th graders have been working on a low relief sculptural project using tin foil, yarn and cardboard. We stressed the idea of varied line and spent a day discovering color schemes such as monochromatic, analogous, complementary and triadic and how limited color can affect our artwork. Colored Sharpies were used to fill in the foil areas between the yarn sections, while sandpaper and Rub n' Buff were used to slightly age our projects. 

The results are something between stain glass and closinae. Art on a budget! 

Pop Art! Candy Paintings

We had a lot fun studying real candy prices as our inspiration for our Pop Art Candy Paintings. Tempra paint and black Sharpie outlines added emphasis and strong lines. The 12" x12" paper created a cropped effect as well. Yum!

Wow! 3D Amate paintings are looking good!

Today, we wrapped up the last bits of painting and outlining on our Amate bark painting. Using simple color theory of cool colors receding and warm colors advancing we were able to achieve a 3D effect with our "prism" glasses. Too bad the 3D effect doesn't work online!
