A Modified Choice Attempt- Still Life Drawings

It seems like forever ago that we stared this project but throw in a 16-day winter break and everything feels like it happened months ago. Here is the breakdown of a open ended project we worked on this quarter:

Still life set up- students took a photo of their favorite angle and saved it on their iPad. They used this as a reference in their drawings. 

Students had free range of what they wanted to use mediums. 

As students played, experimented and determined what mediums would go where they recorded their process. The footage was used to create reflection videos/demos of their personal engagement and persistence. Check out the yogurt cup iPad stand!

iMovie was the app of choice to cut, blend and sync footage together.

Multimedia Still Life Drawings

Our second project in 8th grade art (after our Op Art drawings) was a still life multimedia work. Since it's always difficult to get 30+ kids around one small still life, I use my Ladibug camera to project the image on a screen. Using the camera also allows me to take a photo and post it into Edmodo so the students can view it and work on the project at home. 

We spent some time practicing observational drawing together first and then worked independantly to create our own works. Finished projects are shown below.

Project updates- Zentangle Still Life

Zentangle Still Lifes

What a successful project! We used Sharpie for our Zentangle backgrounds and chalk pastel for our still lifes. Focus was on variety of pattern as well as varied line thickness and value blending. At the beginning of the lesson, the still life image was projected on screen to allow for large classes to view it in detail. We also saved the image on our Edmodo class page for easy access anytime!

Pop Art! Candy Paintings

We had a lot fun studying real candy prices as our inspiration for our Pop Art Candy Paintings. Tempra paint and black Sharpie outlines added emphasis and strong lines. The 12" x12" paper created a cropped effect as well. Yum!

Cubist Still Life

Broken mirrors? No, Cubist art!

We divided our paper with 5-6 lines to create a spilt background. By looking at a still life projected onto the screen, we were able to create a series of objects that "shift" when they overlap a line. Crayon and pastels add explosive color. Well done 8th graders!

Cubist still life rocks!

We are revisiting Picasso with a still life drawing to complement our Picasso portrait. The document camera works great to project our objects.
