Course Description:
This course will be a general art history/production survey course. We will focus primarily on art history periods and artists, review mediums/techniques (from 7th grade) as well as art criticism and aesthetics (what makes art…art!). The elements and principles of art will be a continuous unit throughout the quarter.

Units will consist of various daily warm-up projects and activities relevant to the specific art medium along with a cumulative art piece showcasing skills and techniques learned. Unit grade will reflect all components of the unit.

Grading:
Each weeklong project/unit will be assigned a letter grade (A, B, C, etc). Rubrics will be used for student self-assessment as well as instructor assessment. Project/unit grades will then be averaged for mid-quarter and final quarter grades.

Projects/units will be assessed with the following criteria:
·       Craftsmanship and neatness
·       Effort
·       Three criterions will be determined through teacher/student collaboration. This will vary from project to project.


Attendance/Tardiness:
This course will follow the Becker Middle School attendance and tardiness policy as stated in the Becker Middle School Student and Family Handbook on pages 1-2.

Homework:
Homework is generally not assigned unless the student chooses to bring projects home for additional working time.

Other Requirements/Expectations:
Due Dates:
·       Adequate time will be given in class to complete projects. If you cannot finish a project in class, it should be done as homework before due date.
·       Full credit will be given to projects turned in on time. Grades will drop one letter grade everyday work is late (unless you have made arrangements with Ms. Hare prior).
If you cannot finish a project because of an excused absence, please see me to adjust the due date.

Material Needed:
Materials will be collected at the beginning of 8th grade art. Some of these materials include:
  • Watercolor tray
  • Black permanent markers
  • Glue sticks
  • Plastic paint mixing containers (yogurt containers, sour cream containers, ice cream buckets, etc.
