Chinese Ming Vases

We borrowed this lesson idea from the awesome Italian art blog of Arteascuola. Check out the blog here. The make-your-own scratch art surface is such a cool way to work on value, complex pattern, focal points and unity (we plan on putting these vases together as a large scale group arrangement).

The original lesson from Arteascuola is here.

  1. what a fun idea. I never thought about scratch art in anything but black and your students have done wonderfully on these.

  2. Wow! I'm very happy to see my idea realized from other teachers and students! The results are amazing! I like to share my lessons especially if the works are so well done!!

  3. Wonderful colors and organic natural forms. Reminds me of a painting like Rainy
landscape, by Russian painter Kandinsky, http://EN.WahooArt.com/A55A04/
w.nsf/OPRA/BRUE-8EWL66, that I saw at wahooart.com, from where one can
order a canvas print of it. Really good place to browse the painter’s work and
other work similar to your style of painting.

  4. I want to try this with my 3rd graders. What kind of white paint did you use?

  5. This also works great for Greek Pottery. I have my students color heavy paper with red-orange crayon, paint over it with black tempera, then they scratch out the design. It mimics the same technique the ancient Greeks used. I love it for the Chinese vases. Going to have to do this!

  6. Hi! It is nice to see you using my dragon drawing template that is in the background! I love seeing my projects used in classrooms other than mine! Love the Chinese vase idea, too.

  7. Hi.I'm teeing to do this project but when we are scratching into the white paint it keeps peeling, causing us to not get very accurate or nice designs. Can anyone write back and tell me what they did that really qorked.or what I'm song wrong that's making the paint seem to peel when we are engraving into it.
